Interview with Dr. Kiran Modi - Managing Trustee, Udayan Care

About Program

Dr. Kiran Modi shares the programs of Udayan Care.

We are running several programs and our main insistence is on mentoring. We run all our program in a different way to bring the maximum impact.
In

We studied orphanage system, prevalent in home and abroad. Later on we discovered and developed our own model called Udayan Ghar. These are sunshine homes for orphan and abandoned children. In one home, 12 children live together as a unit like a small family. The mentors known as lifetime volunteers commit themselves to look after them as their own children. The mentor parents form a small group of 3 to 4 people in a group. The children have caretakers and care givers who stay with them in the house, psychologist and other social work staff to look after them. There are 9 homes, out of which 4 are in Delhi, 2 in Noida, 1 in Greater Noida, 1 in Gurgaon and last one just started in Kurukshetra.
Second program is called Udayan Shalini Fellowship program. Shalini means dignified and empowered women. The idea of this program is to get the girls from the disadvantaged family for higher education and to empower them. The desire of these girls to give back to the society makes them dignified. It is a program with us to teach children of how to give back to the society.

In the Ghar program, they are also exposed to higher education. We home school them for a little while and get them admitted to the regular best schools in Delhi like DPS, Sanskriti School.

In the 9 Homes, we can accommodate 150 children. We still have some vacancy; we are looking around for suitable children who need shelter. These children come from totally disadvantaged and illiterate background. We get them through CWC (Child Welfare Committee) located in every district of India, Child Help Line and other NGO's who are working with children.

According to law, children can stay in these Homes till 18. After that it is their personal choice to continue studying. Interested children (above 18 years old) are then shifted to our After Care System in Greater Noida. Currently there are 4-5 children studying. Some children are already moved out in life.

We are running 7 vocational centers like computers, grooming center, stitching and tailoring center around Delhi. Here we also encourage a lot of other communities to come in and learn.
