As per 2001 census Dantewada is least literate district in the entire India. Himanshu Kumar who runs the NGO Vanvasi Chetna Ashram shares the present status (March 2009) of education at Dantewada.

The current situation of education at Dantewada is going from bad to worse.
The villages in Dantewada can be divied into two, one is Salwa Judum and Naxal conflict affected villages and the other villages comes under non-conflict zone. The schools in the Salwa Judum or Naxal affected areas are closed.

Last August, Dantewada district was divided in two, the other one is called Bijapur district. In undivided Dantewada distirct, there were one thousand three hundred and fifty four villages. The population in these villages ranges betwwen three lakh fifty thosaund to four lakh, out of which children makes a large portion of it..

The children wants to learn. Not only the children, but their parents too are interested in sending their kids to school. They want high quality education, which the government school lacks. These are the few changes that we have noticed in their attitudes towards learning.
