Awareness
All
efforts should be directed towards strengthening institutions,
scientifically and technologically, training the existing manpower,
and exchanging information and integrating knowledge by complementing
the efforts of agencies dealing with environment. Each of us
has a role to play in rehabilitating our environment. Let us
not forget that the environment is nothing but an extension
of the individual. We belong to the earth; the earth does not
belong to us. Land, air and water are complex interrelated systems.
Even if one is affected, the effects are reflected on the others,
and their constituents. Therefore, proper resource utilization,
and conservation and maintenance of the ecological balance is
the need of the hour.

Awareness : Government Interventions
National
Environment Awareness Campaign 2004 - 05
The
National Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC) is organized
by the Ministry of Environment & Forests every year since 1986
with the objective of creating environmental awareness at the
national level. This campaign is being continued this year also.
The theme for NEAC 2004-05 is:
Solid
Waste Management
The Ministry of Environment & Forests has identified sub-themes
for conducting the campaign. These include household waste and
composting / vermin-composting, municipal waste, bio-medical
waste, plastics waste, waste management at higher altitude,
electronic waste and industrial waste including fly ash.
Proposals
are invited from the registered NGOs, voluntary organisations,
educational institutions, State Government Departments, registered
professional bodies etc. working in the field of environment
and sustainable development for creating environmental awareness
on the identified theme amongst the masses. The proposal must
include an action oriented component, which would result in
environmental improvement and benefit to the local community.
The
NEAC programme is conducted through the Regional Resource Agencies
(RRAs) identified by the Ministry. List of RRAs indicating their
areas of jurisdiction has been displayed on the Ministry.s web
site (http://envfor.nic.in/divisions/ee/neac0405.pdf). The guidelines
and proforma for submission of proposals can be obtained free
of cost from the designated RRAs. Application form and the guidelines
can also be downloaded from the Ministry.s web site.
The
proposals complete in all respect must reach the concerned RRA
by 19th November, 2004. Proposals received after the last date
will not be considered.

: Wildlife Law Enforcement Training Workshops...
WPSI's Wildlife Law Enforcement Workshops are highly interactive
sessions where important enforcement and legal information is
shared and discussed in an open forum. WPSI's workshops do not
lecture to the audience - they are successful because they depend
on the active participation of everyone involved. Programmes
are tailored to fit in with participants' knowledge of the law
and their capacity to absorb detailed legal facts and issues.

: Database on Tiger Poaching, Trade & Wildlife Crimes
Our initial investigations into the illegal wildlife trade in
India, in the early 1990s, revealed that poaching was occurring
on an increasingly organised scale. The same names turned up
repeatedly in poaching cases from distant parts of the country.
We realised that careful and thorough data collection from every
poaching case was the key to apprehending the perpetrators.

Awareness : Corporate Interventions
Bayer
As
the first private-sector partner to UNEP in the area of youth
and the environment, Bayer organizes and promotes a number of
specific projects which aim to improve knowledge about the environment
among young people and support them in their environmental commitment.
Building on their many years of co-operation in the Asia Pacific
region, Bayer and UNEP decided in June 2004 to put their partnership
on a contractual basis and expand it globally. Focal points
of this cooperation are the regions Asia, Latin America, Africa
and Central and Eastern Europe.
One
of the projects in partnership with UNEP is the Bayer Young
Environmental Envoy Programme (BYEEP), which was initiated in
Thailand in 1995. Over the years, it has expanded to various
countries. We launched the BYEEP in India in 2002.
The
programme seeks to educate youth on the global effort to save
and protect the environment, as we appreciate the fact that
in order to conserve our habitat, we need the cooperation and
understanding of young students.
Two
students are selected each year to represent India at Bayer
AG, Leverkusen (Germany). The selection process entails writing
an essay on projects that the students have undertaken based
on environment protection and sustainable development. In Germany.
they have the opportunity to interact with other students from
various countries across the globe. The study tour is sponsored
by Bayer, and the students can experience first hand, how environmental
protection is practiced by the company, people and government
in industrialized countries.

Programmes
in Gujarat : Gujarat
- Environment Education Bus for Gujarat
On
February 17, 2005, BG India and Gujarat Gas Company Limited
launched 'Prakriti', Gujarat's first mobile environment education
bus, in partnership with the Centre for Environment Education
(CEE). 'Prakriti’ will travel to schools, rural areas and education
and environment fairs in the districts of Surat, Bharuch, Ankleshwar
and Ahmedabad over the coming years. The bus will help create
awareness about environmental concerns and provide an opportunity
for the community to access a ready resource for environment
education and nature conservation. Six foldable panels detail
information specific to Gujarat state on biodiversity, land,
water, energy, air pollution, industries and natural gas.
The
bus is equipped with models on rainwater harvesting, energy
efficiency, solid waste management and grey water and gives
the viewers a peek into the processes involved in each one.
The back panel of the bus opens up and using a roll down screen,
films on environment and conservation can be screened in rural
and other areas where such facilities are unavailable. Interactive
panels with self test quizzes have been positioned with each
of the topics and make the exhibition an enjoyable experience.
Interactive outreach activities such as games and quizzes are
also planned for specific audiences, and carried out while the
exhibition is on display.
While CEE will be undertaking project implementation for Ahmedabad,
the project will be implemented by the Nature Club in Surat
and National Green Corps and District Forest Department in Bharuch
and Ankleshwar, with support from the District Education Office
at all locations. The bus will be based at one location for
a specific time period, during which it will travel to schools
and local community on a regular basis as per a planned route,
before moving on to other areas.
BG India is also
supporting the running of an environment bus by the Bombay Natural
History Society (BNHS). The environment bus conducts outreach
activities for school children and local communities of Mumbai
aimed at increasing environmental awareness.

CIL has taken keen initiative in founding Nature Clubs in various
schools in and around Pune to create an environmental awareness
at an early age amongst children. Currently, there are 23 active
clubs with 2000 students participating in the club activities.
To begin with, the teachers are first trained in a school, who
would later be responsible to conduct and co-ordinate this activity
for children through a qualified environmentalist. Club members
take part in nature camps, nature trails, tree plantations,
etc. Besides, lectures and demonstrations on environment and
nature are held during club meetings and students can also avail
of the library facility for books and video cassettes on environment,
nature and wild life.

L'Oréal
The
cosmetics industry produces very little pollution, far less
than other industrial sectors :
-
it generates no chemical by-products
- it
produces very little waste, and recycles any waste produced
- it
consumes very little energy, water and natural resources
- its
finished products are virtually non-polluting
The Environmental Management Department was created in 1991
and in 2001 was given a budget of 22.09 millions euros for environment
and security.
A responsible company regards respect for the environment as
a civic duty, much more than a mere technical objective or legal
obligation.
Respecting
the environment is a civic responsibility and a duty for the
company. For years, the L'Oréal Group has been acutely
aware of these issues, and has made significant efforts to master
the environmental impact of its activities, as well as those
of its suppliers and contractors.
L'Oréal has initiated performance charts at all its sites,
to measure and monitor interactions with the surrounding natural
environment : concrete results with the reduction of water and
energy consumption, of atmospheric pollution and of transportable
wastes.
Our objective : continued advancement.
In 2001, nearly 8 % of industrial investments were devoted to
the environment and security.
For L'Oréal, the environmental approach is necessarily
global : everyone must share a commitment to protecting the
environment, in research and at production sites, at the Group's
administrative sites, as well as in product development and
especially packaging development.
Offering
effective products of impeccable quality has always been and
will remain a priority for the L'Oréal Group. In order
to achieve its goals, L'Oréal quickly incorporates new
advances in cosmetology ; still, that is not enough : the Group
must make constant progress in environmental protection.
The
environmental work groups at L'Oréal are :
- The
Environmental Management Department
- Environmental
Safety Officers for each administrative, manufacturing and
laboratory site
- An
Environmental Safety Unit at the General Technical Management
level
- An
Environmental Committee working with the Management of the
General Research Division.
The
environmental people at L'Oréal work with the Group's
employees to :
- heighten
awareness
- motivate
- coordinate
- inform
- set
goals
- verify
results
- communicate
This
action by the environmental work group is backed up by :
- training
sessions
- contests
- suggestion
boxes
The cosmetics industry produces very little pollution compared
to other major industrial sectors. Nonetheless, L'Oréal does
not neglect the environment - quite the contrary. in 2001, nearly
8 % of industrial investments were devoted to the environment
and the improvement of security.
- To
increase awareness and motivate the entire workforce to show
greater respect for the environment.
- To
increase the percentage of biodegradable plant substances
in product formulas.
- To
reduce the environmental impact of :
- industrial sites
- shipping centers
- administrative sites.
- To
decrease the volume of POS (Point of Sale)displays, in weight
and in quantity,
while emphasizing recycling.
-
For packaging
- To reduce volume and weight
- To increase their percentage of recycled materials
- To find new packaging solutions
A responsible environmental policy is a long-term commitment.
L'Oréal's continued efforts over the years have produced
concrete achievements :
- Creation
of the "Nicolas Hulot Foundation for Nature and Humanity"
- Use
of electric vehicles and LPG cars on Group sites
- Elimination
of all CFC in aerosols
- Construction
of the purifying station in the Lancôme factory
- Foldable,
recyclable in-store displays resulting in :
- 25% less cardboard used
- 90% reduction of transport and storage space

the girls stood first achieving the highest score in the project.
We had assisted students from the Sir. J. J. Institute of Applied
Arts for their project from which a particular students project
was exhibited at a 4 day Exhibition organised by their college.
We also did a programme where we combined education with entertainment
for students. These students visited the Kamats Klub (a sister
concern of The Orchid), spent time swimming, playing and in
between gave them a talk on environment through puppet shows,
entertainment and games. We targeted about 10,000 children &
more for this one day environment workshop.
We also hosted a presentation cum dinner for Project Eco Quest,
organized by the students of D. Y. Patil College for over 100

well. Another means of spreading environment education and sharing
information is through CD-ROM's, which is a knowledge base on
hospitality and environment sponsored by The Orchid during the
GOOD EARTHKEEPING Seminar. This CD-ROM is a tool especially
developed for this occasion and is a first of its kind in the
hospitality industry, which will serve as a jump-start towards
taking individuals towards a better environment.
The Orchid also distributes this CD-ROM to various educational
institutions and environment organisations.
The Orchid has sponsored the Environmental Teaching Resource
Pack for Hospitality Educational Centres which is being published
jointly by The International Hotel & Restaurant Association
(IH&RA), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
and International Association of Hotel School Directors (EUHOFA).
Advanced
Locality Management (ALM) -
The
Orchid spearheaded this programme of the Municipal Corporation
of Greater Mumbai (M.C.G.M.). Under this programme the residents
of an area take up the cleaning and maintenance of that place
by contributing Re1 per day. The residents themselves take up
cleaning and maintenance and the M.C.G.M. offers guidance and
other aspects like funding. It is basically a residential programme
but we were the first commercial entity to take it up on such
a large scale. It was on The Orchid's initiative and drive,
which got together 5 neighboring hotels, offices, taxi and shop
owners to adopt this programme. For this purpose we have even
formed our own trust known as AIRPORT HOTEL ZONE REPRESENTATIVES
ASSOCIATION where hoteliers contribute Re 1 per day per room.
