Environment Conservation : Government Interventions

Draft Enviornment Protection Rules
GUIDELIES FOR RECOGNITION OF LABORATORY UNDER THE
ENVIRONMENT (PROTECTION) ACT, 1986

Charter on Corporate Responsibility for Environmental Protection - CREP

  1. Industrial development is an important constituent in our pursuits for economic growth, employment generation and betterment in the quality of life. On the other hand, industrial activities, without proper precautionary measures for environmental protection are known to cause pollution and associated problems. Hence, it is necessary to comply with the regulatory norms for prevention and control of pollution. Alongside, it is also imperative to go beyond compliance through adoption of clean technologies and improvement in management practices. Commitment and voluntary initiatives of industry for responsible care of the environment will help in building a partnership for pollution control. This is the very purpose of this Charter.

  2. With this in view, a series of industry-specific interaction meetings have been organised as per details given below, to formulate the Charter on Corporate Responsibility for Environmental Protection (CREP).

  3. The action points enlisted in the Charter are addressed to corporate bodies as well as regulatory agencies. Thus, the Charter is a commitment for partnership and participatory action of the concerned stakeholders. The Charter is also a road map for progressive improvement in environmental management systems. Thus, it is not necessarily limited to compliance of end-of-the-pipe effluent and emission standards. In a number of industrial sectors, the targets set in the Charter are ahead of effluent and emission standards. During interaction meetings, the representatives of some industrial sectors sought extension of time to meet the regulatory norms because of techno-economic constraints. In case of units falling in such industrial sectors, time bound action has been proposed in the Charter. This measure has been agreed on the understanding that a bank guarantee would be furnished by the concerned units indicating the commitment to the action plan. However, this is without any prejudice to the stipulations made in the existing standards and action already taken/initiated for non-compliance and area-specific requirements warranting stringent actions.

  4. The industrial units which are not complying with the national standards notified under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, will submit action plan to meet the standards and bank guarantee to respective State Pollution Control Board within 3 months (by June, 2003).

CEE : Small Grants Programme
Small Grants Programme (SGP), funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), seeks to support initiatives, which demonstrate community-based innovative, gender sensitive approaches and lessons learned from other development projects in order to reduce threats to the local and global environment.
The GEF/SGP was launched in 1991 by United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) to assist developing countries in fulfilling their commitment towards the protection of the global environment. The Programme is sourced with a belief that global environmental problems can only be addressed adequately only if local people are involved in planning, decision making and sharing roles and responsibilties at all levels. Even with small amounts of funding, communities can undertake activities that will make a 'significant difference' to their lives and environment. UNDP GEF/SGP is currently offered in 76 countries worldwide.
The programme was launched in India in 1997. SGP is administered by the UNDP and the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MOEF), Government of India. It is being implemented by Centre for Environment Education (CEE) as the National Host Institution (NHI) since September 2000. Small Grants Programme provides grants to organizations for activities that address local problems and offer local solutions to global problems in the GEF thematic areas of: Biodiversity conservation Climate Change Mitigation Protection of International Waters Prevention of Land Degradation Phasing out Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Financial support by SGP SGP will normally consider grants up to Rs. 15 lakh for each project. In special cases, where co-financing and partnership commitments are more, higher budgets may be considered, if the project activities justify this.
More emphasis is placed on leveraging local contributions in cash and in kind from communities. Duration of a project The duration of the projects can be between 24 to 30 months. This may however be flexible to meet the needs of the project ideas. Who can apply Non-governmental and community-based organisations that demonstrate track record, relevant experience and skills in the content area of the proposal/idea.

ATREE : EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
The Education and Outreach component of ATREE's work is rooted in its core research and scientific efforts and constantly evolving through a consultative process with stakeholders and partners. ATREE and its collaborating institutions work with rural and urban schools/colleges in designing and delivering innovative conservation education programs. ATREE's outreach activities have three broad aims. The first is capacity building of government and non-government organizations; the second, to create awareness about conservation and environmental issues; and, the third, to participate in and foster networks to help promote the cause of conservation.

ATREE is built on a strong academic foundation and actively pursues investigations in the natural and social sciences, which form the basis for ongoing projects that are dedicated to outreach and education. Action-oriented research is critical to laying the groundwork of knowledge necessary for protecting India's biodiversity. Thus our research programmes are emblematic of ways in which basic knowledge can be applied to conservation imperatives. ATREE's research comprises programmes in three principle multidisciplinary areas of interest that are housed in interrelated Centres:

Atree : Conservation and Livelihoods Programme
Humans have historically depended on tropical forests for a variety of plant and animal products. However, recent demand for timber and the expansion of industrial and agricultural activities, have increased the rate of tropical forest loss. Apart from the direct impact on biological diversity, the impacts of forest loss and degradation on the livelihoods of communities that live in these forests are equally high. At ATREE we believe that a detailed understanding of the drivers that cause this forest loss will enable us to address and reduce the rate of forest loss and degradation. There is also an urgent challenge of conserving biodiversity while also addressing the needs of communities' dependence on biotic resources. The conservation and livelihoods program at ATREE addresses these issues through a series of multi-disciplinary action and research initiatives.

The Kanakapura range is approximately 450 sq km and runs from the south of Bangalore city to the Cauvery River. It is an area of moderate biodiversity with low rainfall, undulating topography, degraded dry deciduous and scrub forests that experiences chronically high soil loss. A large portion of the land is highly fragmented Reserve Forest, interspersed with agricultural communities. Rain-fed, antiquated farming practices, coupled with increased elephant raids on crops as the area is an elephant corridor results in poor agricultural productivity and marginal livelihoods. Therefore, these communities augment their income by increasingly depending on the forest through fuel wood collection, animal grazing, and the harvesting of non-timber forest products.
Our entry into this area was through Conservation education in schools. We have established school biodiversity gardens and developed hands-on educational modules that utilize these gardens as back-yard laboratories in natural resource conservation. The laboratories are managed by the school children themselves. We have come in contact with teachers and parents who cultivate land and these interactions have opened up avenues for land-linked domestication of NTFPs including medicinal plants in Agroforestry. Using this entry point we have been able to establish SHGs among the women, which were eventually linked to conservation oriented livelihood alternatives.
Conservation education in schools
We have networked with 70 schools in the Kanakpura Range. Schools have participated in a hands-on environmental education program of raising seedlings of native tree species in their backyards and planting them in school grounds. Students and teachers have planted and live-fenced 1200 tree seedlings of various native species in 40 rural schools with a 70% survival rate. Urban and rural children cooperated to plant and fence some of the tree seedlings on rural school grounds. We have started medicinal plant gardens in schools. Students have collected and identified species of indigenous and exotic trees and shrubs and different varieties of vegetables. Eco clubs were formed to look after the seedlings planted in earlier seasons and to do mulching and basining for the same.

Environment Conservation : Corporate Interventions

ABB
ABB's environmental initiatives extend beyond legal compliance and certifications. It also looks closely at the environmental implications of the company’s operations, products and facilities, elimination of waste and emissions, maximising efficiency and productivity and minimising adverse impact on natural resources. For instance, at a group level, ABB is working towards carbon dioxide neutrality.
All units of ABB in India are ISO 14001 certified and over 20 environmental management projects are underway across locations. Some of these include recycling, energy conservation, work area improvement, rainwater harvesting, vermiculture and greening. ABB has over 6,000 saplings planted across its own eight manufacturing units, with an average of 500 new saplings being added each year. ABB has environmental product declarations for key products, which declare their environmental impact throughout the product-life cycle.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ACC : Committed to Environment Protection
ACC is among the first Indian companies to include commitment to environmental protection as one of its corporate objectives. Long before pollution control norms and regulatory laws came into existence, ACC inducted the use of sophisticated high efficiency pollution control equipment for cement kilns, raw mills, coal mills, power plants and coolers. That was in 1966. Today each ACC factory has high efficiency state-of-the art pollution control equipment and devices. Each of our manufacturing units has a separate Environment Section manned by a qualified environmental engineer and supporting staff. Our plants, mines and townships demonstrate the company's successful endeavours in 'greening' activities such as afforestation, tree planting, horticulture, vegetable and cultivation apart from basic landscaping designed to enrich and beautify the environment. Cleaner mining techniques have helped safeguard and conserve mineral resources. In addition, we have taken other positive measures such as top-soil conservation, efficient water management systems and the treatment of wastes, sewage and effluents. Some of our plants have become near self-reliant in their water requirements. ACC has achieved spectacular results in the utilization of two hazardous and pollutant industrial wastes - namely slag from steel plants and fly-ash from thermal power stations - to make blended cements that help conserve limestone resources. Over the years, ACC has won several prizes and certificates of merit for environmental measures undertaken at its various plants and mines. In particular for programs involving 'greening,' afforestation, rehabilitation of mines, noise abatement and other visible measures such as tree plantation and water management.

Ashok Leyland : Environmental Policy
We are committed to preserving the environment through a comprehensive Environmental Policy and a proactive approach in planning and executing our manufacturing and service activities. The objective of Ashok Leyland's Environmental Policy is to adhere to all applicable environmental legislations and regulations, adopt pollution preventive techniques in design and manufacture, conserve all resources such as power, water etc., and optimise its usage, through scientific means, minimize waste generation by all possible ways and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle the same through a time bound action plan as well as provide a clean working environment to our employees, contractors and neighbours.Towards this, we propagate our environmental policy and our commitment to continuous improvement to all employees, suppliers, customers and neighbours.

"We are concerned about the earth our children will inherit. That's why we make sure our vehicles consume less, pollute less. This concern is reflected in the manufacturing systems, the various processes, energy conservation measures and conscious greening initiatives of the Company.”

In 2002, all the vehicle manufacturing units of Ashok Leyland were ISO 14001 certified with Environmental Management System.
Over the decades, Ashok Leyland's R&D engineers have been addressing the twin concerns of fuel-efficiency and emissions. Not surprisingly, when the legislation came in 1987, limiting vehicular emission, Ashok Leyland vehicles were already meeting them. In 1992, came the more stringent norms for gaseous emissions. By then, Ashok Leyland, through timely technology tie-ups - and ahead of competition - had absorbed and was offering eco-friendly engine technology. In 1996, when the permissible levels of gaseous exhaust emissions were further tightened, Ashok Leyland again met the norms with ease.
Ashok Leyland has pro-actively developed its engines to meet the progressive emission norms, including the Bharat Shage II norms.

Asian Paints
Asian Paints approaches the environment issue from the perspective of waste minimisation and conservation of resources. Thus, the continued attempt is to reuse, recycle and eliminate waste, which results in less and less waste being generated. Accordingly material losses in manufacturing have been reduced substantially over the last few years. Further, the company's four paint plants and the two chemical plants in India have the ISO 14001 certification for environment management standards.
In 2002-03, Asian Paints instituted its own safety standards across all plants in India, which is based on the standards prescribed by the British Safety Council (BSC). This year, the four paint plants in India merited a Five-Star rating by the BSC. More significantly, three of our plants - Bhandup, Ankleshwar and Patancheru - were awarded the BSC's much sought after "Sword of Honour", which is considered as the pinnacle of achievement in safety across the world. The Sword of Honour is given to only 40 plants in the world each year and is designed to reward the best practices in this field. To have three of the company' s paint plants ranked among the top 40 in the first year of audit emphasises our steadfast commitment to safety.

Further due to various initiatives undertaken by the company at all its manufacturing facilities, Asian Paints was the recipient of the prestigious 'Golden Peacock National Quality award' for 2003. This is the most coveted quality award in the country. All our paint plants have achieved 'zero industrial discharge' capability. This has been achieved by the installation of upgraded effluent treatment facilities and installation of reverse osmosis plants in conjunction with appropriate recycling & reuse schemes. Our emulsion manufacturing facility has also achieved 'zero waste' status.

We have adapted the principles of "green productivity". Some of our innovative schemes, which enhance green productivity are

  • Colour World dealer tinting system - allows for greater choice at the customer end thus reducing the number of shades produced in the factories. This has resulted in larger batch sizes and lesser number of changeovers leading to effluent reduction.
  • Upgradation of material handling and storage facilities - such as the new bulk storage facility for monomers to reduce material losses and eliminate effluent generation arising out of barrel cleaning.
  • Upgradation of process technology- has resulted in increased yield and therefore lesser pollution. For instance, the improved filtration process has resulted in higher filtration rates and lower losses.
  • Use of natural gas as fuel - instead of furnace oil or diesel has not only improved fuel efficiency but also reduced sulphur dioxide emissions by 77%.
  • Solvent recovery plants - set up with an investment of Rs.1.8 million, these plants have resulted in almost zero solvent disposal and have already yielded a direct benefit of Rs.10.4 million.
  • Improved incinerating systems - have resulted in over 72 % reduction in waste after incineration. The remaining waste is also being re-used. For instance, we have eliminated the need for disposal of incinerator ash by manufacturing bricks. These bricks are used for internal construction purposes.
  • Reverse osmosis - helps us re-use treated effluents in our cooling towers. This has reduced fresh water consumption by 50 kilolitres per day.
  • Rainwater harvesting - scheme developed by us has become the benchmark for industries. Rainwater harvesting has resulted in around 14.5 million litres being harvested in 2003-04 and used at our plants.

As a result of implementing various water recycling, reuse and conservation measures in our plants, our average water consumption has reduced by 45 % inspite of production volumes of water based products doubling in the last five years. Asian Paints is committed to operate its plants and facilities in a manner to ensure continual improvement towards achieving 'CLEAN ENVIRONMENT'.

BPCL

As an energy corporate, BPCL feel that we may have a larger say in the course of many events in the coming decades. The consequence of our actions, in the short term, may be totally inadequate but in the long term very valid. It is thus that BPCL finds it necessary and proceeds with utmost caution, when it comes to issues related with the environment.

The magnitude of the problem concerning this sensitive eco-balance is so massive that the best way forward for BPCL, as it sees ahead, for the above being achieved is using a two pronged approach of “executing environmental protection activities and sharing knowledge, with a view to educate the common man on this front”.

The four reasons, believed to be the cause for treading cautiously in matters related to the environment are as follows.

Our moral responsibility towards the environment.
Understanding of the need for an ecological balance.
The understanding of the interlankages of the web of life. Inadequacy of Human
Understanding of Environmental Process.

The above four cover the entire canvass of concerns for the subject and BPCL’s contribution towards the same has also been oriented around its objective

Like mentioned, BPCL’s corporate philosophy towards environment is also directed towards life and mankind. Thus, it is a tacit responsibility that it proposes to undertake without any solemn promises made. In other words, It would try and ensure that at least in its conscious actions, BPCL would not become party to any decisions which will have damaging consequences to this earth & the life on it.

BPCL, on the other hand would give its best in educating mankind, on the necessity of understanding the dynamics of the fragile eco-diversity and hope to seek contributions from each individual in maintaining the balance.

Kirloskar Group
Our culture of conscientious engineering encompasses pollution control, waste management, effluent treatment and eco-friendly engineering. Being a manufacturing group it becomes inevitable for us to take care of the environment. We take full care to meet the environment friendly norms. We have the environment policy to initiate and monitor pollution control practices and to improve continuously the environment. All of our products are tested to be environment friendly. Moreover, they are manufactured under stringent norms of the least possible emission and waste to meet the standards.

What is the ISO-14001 Environment Management System?

ISO-14001 is a member of the ISO-14000 family of international standards which cover management of the environment. The IS0-14001 Standard provides a structured process to achieve continuous improvements in the organisation's environmental performance. It is based on the dynamic and cyclic process of "plan, implement, check and review".

The Policy
The organisation's environmental policy, as enunciated by the top management must reflect its commitment :

a) To comply with relevant environmental legislation and regulations.
b) To make continual environmental improvement and prevention of pollution.
This policy is to be documented, implemented, and communicated to all employees. It must also be available to the public, on request.

The Plan
The organisation establishes procedures that will :

a) Identify environmental aspects of its activities /products /services which it can control and over which it can be expected to have influence, so as to know the factors which have significant impact on the environment (air, water or land).

b) Identify the legal and other environmental regulations which apply to the organisation's activities /products/services.

In keeping with its environmental policy, and taking into account the areas of significant impact, the organisation sets appropriate environmental objectives and targets for itself. These targets should be measurable where practicable.

Technological options, financial and operational requirements too, have their say in the shaping of these objectives. Time-frames are set, and the personnel who will implement the environment policy are identified.

Implementation and operation
The ISO-14001 system is integrated with the overall management system for smooth operation. Roles and responsibilities are defined and communicated across the company.

Specific managers are assigned the tasks of :

a) Ensuring that system requirements are implemented in keeping with the international standard.

b) Reporting to top management for review, with a view to improving the system.

Employees at each function/level must be made aware of each one's particular responsibility as also the significant environmental impact/benefits of their work activities. They must fully realize the importance of conforming to environmental policy and the consequences - possibly hazardous - of non-conformance.

Procedures are laid down to identify/deal with emergency and potential - emergency situations and to prevent or mitigate adverse environmental impact.

Resources (human, technological, and financial) are committed to implement the system. Training needs are identified and provided for.

Checks and correction
The organisation's operations which could have a significant impact on the environment must be monitored and measured on a regular basis. To this end, detailed environmental records are maintained.

Responsibility is assigned

a) To investigate any non-conformance.

b) To take action in case of adverse impact.

Periodic environmental audits are submitted to management. These determine whether the environment management system is conforming

1) To the organisation's environment objectives
2) To environment legislation and
3) To the requirements of the international standard.

Review
Periodic reviews by the management are needed to ensure that the system is performing effectively. In light of the audit results, the management may consider changes in its environment policy and objectives or, if need be, initiate action to tackle any major non-conformance.

The benefits
Implementation of ISO-14001 promises :
Improved operational efficiency with better utilization of materials/resources, reduced costs and wastage and reduced pressure on the environment. Assurance to interested parties and increasing access to world markets encourages partnership between industry and the regulatory authority. It enhances corporate image, improves staff morale and the work environment. Importantly, it also helps in building an environment-conscious nation. The ISO-14001 Standard has been accepted enthusiastically by the Indian industry, with 25 companies receiving the certification as of October 1997 (Bajaj Auto, Godrej, INDAL, NALCO, IOC, etc.). By implementing this Standard, these companies have made substantial gains both in terms of saving on resources and preventing environmental degradation.

McDonalds : An Eco-Friendly Company
Our environmental commitment and behavior is guided by the following principles;
- Effectively managing the waste.
- Conserving and protecting natural resources.
- Encouraging environmental values and practices.

In this regard the company has some of the finest firsts to its credit. We have been trailblazers in many efforts as listed here

  • 'Litter Patrol' was introduced, wherein McDonald's employees virtually comb the garbage spilled in immediate vicinity of the restaurant for a cleaner neighborhood
  • We pioneered the concept of `Grease Traps' for zero oil contamination in residual wastewater. The Delhi Government, overwhelmed with this initiative used McDonald's as an example to educate other QSR's (Quick Serving restaurants) on this.
  • Well ahead of the government stipulations, McDonald's voluntarily withdrew the use of polythene bags. Recyclable paper bags have since replaced them. In order to generate greater awareness on the abandoning use of plastic, McDonald's in association with the Government of Delhi (Department of Environment) as a part of their Bhagidari Yojna, had organized a contest among school children across Delhi to eradicate the use of plastic bags. Ronald McDonald, McDonald's brand icon was chosen the ambassador for this drive by the Delhi Government. The month-long Extinct Plastic Bags Contest encouraged school children to collect plastic bags littered in their neighborhood and deposit them with Eco-Club collection centers in their respective schools. These bags were weighed at the end of the month and the top 120 collectors were suitably rewarded.
  • The company has identified Trash Segregation as an integral part of its environment policy and has introduced trash segregation in most of its restaurants.
  • Yamuna Cleaning Campaign; as an active partner of Delhi Government's Bhagidari Scheme, McDonald's India teamed up with the Government of Delhi in the "Clean the Yamuna" project. Employees of McDonald have lent a helping hand in cleaning up the river from where Delhites source their drinking water.
  • Visualizing that recycling and rainwater harvesting is the need of the hour commenced wastewater treatments at Manesar, Jullandhar and Doraha (Zero drain facility).
  • Our approach to energy management involves tools and training in energy saving procedures, like proper equipment maintenance and promoting and using energy saving technologies. At McDonald's we strive to reduce energy use, as we see this as the top environmental priority for our restaurants.

Bayer
As the first private-sector partner to UNEP in the area of youth and the environment, Bayer organizes and promotes a number of specific projects which aim to improve knowledge about the environment among young people and support them in their environmental commitment. Building on their many years of co-operation in the Asia Pacific region, Bayer and UNEP decided in June 2004 to put their partnership on a contractual basis and expand it globally. Focal points of this cooperation are the regions Asia, Latin America, Africa and Central and Eastern Europe.
One of the projects in partnership with UNEP is the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy Programme (BYEEP), which was initiated in Thailand in 1995. Over the years, it has expanded to various countries. We launched the BYEEP in India in 2002.
The programme seeks to educate youth on the global effort to save and protect the environment, as we appreciate the fact that in order to conserve our habitat, we need the cooperation and understanding of young students.

Two students are selected each year to represent India at Bayer AG, Leverkusen (Germany). The selection process entails writing an essay on projects that the students have undertaken based on environment protection and sustainable development. In Germany. they have the opportunity to interact with other students from various countries across the globe. The study tour is sponsored by Bayer, and the students can experience first hand, how environmental protection is practiced by the company, people and government in industrialized countries.

BG India

Programmes in Gujarat : Gujarat - Environment Education Bus for Gujarat
On February 17, 2005, BG India and Gujarat Gas Company Limited launched 'Prakriti', Gujarat's first mobile environment education bus, in partnership with the Centre for Environment Education (CEE). 'Prakriti’ will travel to schools, rural areas and education and environment fairs in the districts of Surat, Bharuch, Ankleshwar and Ahmedabad over the coming years. The bus will help create awareness about environmental concerns and provide an opportunity for the community to access a ready resource for environment education and nature conservation. Six foldable panels detail information specific to Gujarat state on biodiversity, land, water, energy, air pollution, industries and natural gas.

The bus is equipped with models on rainwater harvesting, energy efficiency, solid waste management and grey water and gives the viewers a peek into the processes involved in each one. The back panel of the bus opens up and using a roll down screen, films on environment and conservation can be screened in rural and other areas where such facilities are unavailable. Interactive panels with self test quizzes have been positioned with each of the topics and make the exhibition an enjoyable experience. Interactive outreach activities such as games and quizzes are also planned for specific audiences, and carried out while the exhibition is on display.
While CEE will be undertaking project implementation for Ahmedabad, the project will be implemented by the Nature Club in Surat and National Green Corps and District Forest Department in Bharuch and Ankleshwar, with support from the District Education Office at all locations. The bus will be based at one location for a specific time period, during which it will travel to schools and local community on a regular basis as per a planned route, before moving on to other areas.

BG India is also supporting the running of an environment bus by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). The environment bus conducts outreach activities for school children and local communities of Mumbai aimed at increasing environmental awareness.

L'Oréal

The cosmetics industry produces very little pollution, far less than other industrial sectors :

  • it generates no chemical by-products
  • it produces very little waste, and recycles any waste produced
  • it consumes very little energy, water and natural resources
  • its finished products are virtually non-polluting

The Environmental Management Department was created in 1991 and in 2001 was given a budget of 22.09 millions euros for environment and security.

A responsible company regards respect for the environment as a civic duty, much more than a mere technical objective or legal obligation.

Respecting the environment is a civic responsibility and a duty for the company. For years, the L'Oréal Group has been acutely aware of these issues, and has made significant efforts to master the environmental impact of its activities, as well as those of its suppliers and contractors.

L'Oréal has initiated performance charts at all its sites, to measure and monitor interactions with the surrounding natural environment : concrete results with the reduction of water and energy consumption, of atmospheric pollution and of transportable wastes.

Our objective : continued advancement.

In 2001, nearly 8 % of industrial investments were devoted to the environment and security.

For L'Oréal, the environmental approach is necessarily global : everyone must share a commitment to protecting the environment, in research and at production sites, at the Group's administrative sites, as well as in product development and especially packaging development.

Offering effective products of impeccable quality has always been and will remain a priority for the L'Oréal Group. In order to achieve its goals, L'Oréal quickly incorporates new advances in cosmetology ; still, that is not enough : the Group must make constant progress in environmental protection.

The environmental work groups at L'Oréal are :

  • The Environmental Management Department
  • Environmental Safety Officers for each administrative, manufacturing and laboratory site
  • An Environmental Safety Unit at the General Technical Management level
  • An Environmental Committee working with the Management of the General Research Division.

The environmental people at L'Oréal work with the Group's employees to :

  • heighten awareness
  • motivate
  • coordinate
  • inform
  • set goals
  • verify results
  • communicate

This action by the environmental work group is backed up by :

  • training sessions
  • contests
  • suggestion boxes

The cosmetics industry produces very little pollution compared to other major industrial sectors. Nonetheless, L'Oréal does not neglect the environment - quite the contrary. in 2001, nearly 8 % of industrial investments were devoted to the environment and the improvement of security.

  • To increase awareness and motivate the entire workforce to show greater respect for the environment.
  • To increase the percentage of biodegradable plant substances in product formulas.
  • To reduce the environmental impact of :
    - industrial sites
    - shipping centers
    - administrative sites.
  • To decrease the volume of POS (Point of Sale)displays, in weight and in quantity,
    while emphasizing recycling.
  • For packaging
    - To reduce volume and weight
    - To increase their percentage of recycled materials
    - To find new packaging solutions

A responsible environmental policy is a long-term commitment. L'Oréal's continued efforts over the years have produced concrete achievements :

  • Creation of the "Nicolas Hulot Foundation for Nature and Humanity"
  • Use of electric vehicles and LPG cars on Group sites
  • Elimination of all CFC in aerosols
  • Construction of the purifying station in the Lancôme factory
  • Foldable, recyclable in-store displays resulting in :
    - 25% less cardboard used
    - 90% reduction of transport and storage space

Advanced Locality Management (ALM) -

The Orchid spearheaded this programme of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (M.C.G.M.). Under this programme the residents of an area take up the cleaning and maintenance of that place by contributing Re1 per day. The residents themselves take up cleaning and maintenance and the M.C.G.M. offers guidance and other aspects like funding. It is basically a residential programme but we were the first commercial entity to take it up on such a large scale. It was on The Orchid's initiative and drive, which got together 5 neighboring hotels, offices, taxi and shop owners to adopt this programme. For this purpose we have even formed our own trust known as AIRPORT HOTEL ZONE REPRESENTATIVES ASSOCIATION where hoteliers contribute Re 1 per day per room.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our environmental commitment and behavior is guided by the following principles;
