What
is the Purpose of the Education Forum
The purpose of education forum is to share the
present canvas of India's education in terms of status and challenges,
offer solutions to these challenges with inputs from thought leaders
and field experts, and build partnerships between multiple stakeholders.
India moved its deadline of Universalisation of Elementary Education
from 1960 to 2010. At the end of 2010, while we managed over 97%
enrolment, we still had over 60 lakh children out of school and
many more dropping out of the system midway. While there are many
factors contributing to this, including our inability to create
jobs for millions of students coming out of schools / colleges,
the major problem was that we never projected education as a powerful
driver of development, and one of the strongest instruments for
reducing poverty and improving health, gender equality, peace,
and stability.
UEE meant seven years of schooling.
We never helped a farmer - who thought that after all the years
of schooling if his sons are going to work in farms, why should
they go to school beyond certain age, - understand that a well
read child can add more value to the entire chain of farming cycle,
right from using high yield variety, to adopting better farming
techniques, adding more crops per season, to marketing the produce
to even understanding the global threats of patents. Similarly,
we never helped parents understand the value in sending their
daughters to school or their special children to schools.
In the last few years, governments have taken great speed in
reforming education, and more needs to be done if we are to achieve
MDGs by 2015.
