Plastic bags may be
free at the supermarket or your grocer, but they cost us plenty when it
comes to the environment.
Plastic bags are manufactured with petroleum, which increases our reliance
on foreign oil. They also break down into bits of
toxic pollutants, contaminating our soil, oceans, rivers and lakes. Many
marine mammals also die as a result of eating plastic
bags they mistake for food. Each year, about 500 billion to a trillion
plastic bags are used around the world.
