Interview with Mr. Suresh Babu-Coordinator, River Pollution Team-CSE

Mr. Babu on the status of Rivers in India

I do not want to make Ganga as a benchmark, because every river and water body has it’s own problem. We are seeing that presently every river, lake or any water body is getting more and more polluted. There are rivers, which are worst than the Ganga. The issues of Ganga are simplified as compared to other rivers, because Ganag has a flow. The problem in Yamuna, one tributaries of Ganga is more severe, as there is absolutely no fresh water flow in the river.

The condition of rivers like Musi and Bundi in Rajasthan are really very terrible. There is absence of freshwater flow and the amount of pollution that we are putting in it is phenomenal.
GAP has created some infrastructure to take care of some amount of sewage in Ganga. However there are rivers in India, which have 100% untreated sewage. So problems are different in rivers located at different parts of our country.

Government’s has spent phenomenal amount of money in its initiative called National River Cleaning Program. Around twenty five hundred crore has been sent so far, but unfortunately nothing is visible on ground.

I hope that the lessons learnt from the failures of the plans, should be immediately implemented accordingly, otherwise all the money will be ineffective.
